Reserva Packouts

Cost Simulator

Packing houses operate in an environment where margins can shift quickly. Raw product pricing, packaging materials, pallet configuration, labor assumptions and sourcing decisions all play a role in determining the final cost of a packed product.

In many operations, however, costing visibility only comes after production has already happened. By that point, inventory has moved, accounting entries have been created and operational decisions have already been made.

To help teams better understand production costs before execution, Reserva Packouts now includes a Cost Simulator Tool as a way to model repacking scenarios using existing Costing Guides without affecting inventory, accounting, reservations or live operational workflows. Instead of treating costing as a historical record, the feature turns it into a planning and forecasting tool that can support production, finance and procurement decisions before a real packout takes place.

Plan Before You Pack

Traditionally, repacking operations often rely on historical production data to understand profitability. The challenge is that production variables change constantly and what was profitable last month may not be profitable today.

Reserva Packouts Cost Simulator gives teams a way to evaluate repacking scenarios ahead of execution by simulating how a product behaves financially when converted from one variant to another and compare assumptions side by side before committing operationally.

Understanding Repacking Costs

Let’s take an example to better understand why is crucial for a produce business to understand and analize repacking costs before taking any action on sales angle.

"A packing house receives a pallet of bulk tomatoes purchased at $18 per case and the operations team is considering repacking that inventory into smaller retail packs for a special customer promotion. The Manager needs to calculate profitability."

Before moving forward, the Manager needs to answer a few questions:

  • Will the repack still be profitable at today’s market price?
  • How much will labor, packaging, and pallet costs impact margins?
  • Is it better to sell the original product as-is instead?

In many produce operations, this crucial analysis is still done manually in spreadsheets (or custom systems with zero integration to inventory or financial side of your own business) which is time consuming and prone to human errors.

After calculations are made, if the expected selling price for current week is only $21.50, the repack operation could generate a loss, even though the same conversion may have been profitable last month. So decisions must be made to secure a profitable trade: repacking needs to change or not do the repack at all.

Reserva’s Cost Simulator allows teams to model these scenarios directly inside the ERP before production begins.

Users can simulate repacking costs in real time, compare multiple conversion scenarios side by side and instantly understand projected margins based on current commodity prices, packaging expenses and operational costs; helping teams make faster, more profitable decisions before inventory is committed.

What the Cost Simulator Does

The Cost Simulator is available directly within Reserva Packouts and works from existing Costing Guides already used by the operation.

Users define a repacking scenario by selecting a parent product, source product and destination product, then simulate how costs behave during the conversion process. The simulation can start from the current weighted average cost or lot cost, while also allowing manual overrides for what-if analysis.

Each simulation can be saved as a historical estimate, allowing teams to compare assumptions over time and support budgeting, forecasting and standard cost reviews. Keeping a history of estimates also provides better visibility into seasonal cost changes and operational trends.

The tool includes palletization as part of the calculation, helping teams estimate packed unit cost, full pallet cost and pallet cost allocation across finished products. This is especially useful in produce operations where pallet configuration can have a significant impact on margins, the simulator lets teams compare palletized and non-palletized scenarios and see the difference in real terms.

From Costing Guide to Profitability Engine

Reserva Packouts already supports repacking, grading, palletization, food production and traceability workflows built specifically for produce operations. The Cost Simulator extends those capabilities by transforming Costing Guides from a static execution reference into an active planning and profitability tool.

Instead of waiting until after production to understand margins, teams can now simulate profitability before operations begin, evaluating whether a repack configuration is still profitable under current market conditions, understanding the impact of switching source products or lots, preparing budget assumptions for upcoming production cycles and comparing multiple scenarios side by side.

Just as importantly, once a simulation produces a reliable estimate, users can optionally apply those results directly as the standard cost of the finished product. This creates a seamless bridge between planning and execution, replacing disconnected spreadsheets and guesswork with a saved, reviewable simulation backed by real operational costing data.

For finance teams, operations managers and cost accountants, the result is a faster and more auditable process for keeping standard costs aligned with real-world conditions while giving teams the confidence to make profitability decisions before inventory is committed operationally.

Simulate Freely, Decide Confidently

With Reserva Packouts Cost Simulator all calculations made happen independently from live operational workflows. No inventory movements, stock reservations or accounting entries are created. Teams can test sourcing alternatives, packaging strategies, palletization assumptions and cost overrides in a safe environment... then act when they're ready.

For operations managers, finance teams, cost accountants and procurement planners, the Cost Simulator provides a practical way to evaluate costs, compare scenarios and forecast outcomes in the fast-moving environment of a produce packing house.
